"New village", but very old
In Byzantine times it was called "Neochorion", meaning "new village", and the name was translated literally into Turkish as Yeniköy. From the 18th century wealthy families built waterfront mansions (yalı) along its shore, and these yalıs are still counted among Istanbul's most valuable properties.
A mosque, churches and a synagogue
Yeniköy still carries its multicultural past: the Osman Reis Mosque designed by Alexandre Vallaury (1904), the Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition (1837), the Armenian Church of Surp Asdvadzadzin and the Yeniköy Synagogue stand in the same neighbourhood. The poet Constantine Cavafy lived here from 1882 to 1885 and wrote a poem about it. Agatha Christie is said to have stayed at a Yeniköy yalı in 1933.
Living and doing business in Yeniköy today
Characterful old buildings, carefully renovated apartments and yalıs make up the neighbourhood's housing. Up the hillside there are long-established compounds such as Mimarlar Sitesi with its Bosphorus views and Tahir Paşa Evleri, known for its villas. Cafés, restaurants and boutique shops along the shore attract both residents and visitors, which makes a shop or commercial space in Yeniköy valuable for buyers and tenants alike.
